Culling of Stratholme

Overview

This caverns of time experience takes place during the events in Warcraft 3 when Arthas first started to turn to the dark side by “cleansing” Stratholme of plague victims and everything else within the walls. The recommended level¬† for this instance is 80.

Gear and consumables

Like most Wrath of the Lich King dungeons, the Heroic version of this instance is tuned for players who are using high quality level 80 gear, as well as the best flasks and food buffs available. Getting the best possible gear for your character will make this fight a whole lot easier.

In WotLK, professions can be used to craft high quality epic gear. Most raid bosses also drop an epic bind-on-equip item. These items are the easiest way to get your character geared up fast, but they’re expensive to craft or buy on the AH. The easiest way to get your hands on them is to use a guide like WoW Gold Secrets, which has tips for making several thousand gold per day. This is a great way to save time and clear instances faster.

Quests

Dispelling Illusions – Available to both factions from Chromie just inside the instance, Leads to A Royal Escort

Trash

The trash in The Culling of stratholme is similar to that of Mount Hyjal, after you clear the plague crates and start the event there will be 10 waves of 3-4 mobs, the 5th and 10th of which are bosses.

If there are any Necromancers in the groups, it is a good idea to get this first. During the clearing of these waves there will also be non-elite zombies that spawn nonstop, generally these can be 1 shot.

Past the first 10 waves Arthas will start another run which will spawn groups of Infinite Agents leading to the 3rd boss. The last stretch of trash is straight forward; Arthas will run forward attacking everything in his path, you must escort him, generally 1-2 elites at a time.

Meathook

Abilities:

Constricting Chains – Encases the target in chains dealing 1000 damage every second for 5 seconds.

Disease Expulsion – Meathook belches out a cloud of disease, dealing 713-787 nature damage and interrupting the spell casting of nearby targets for 4 seconds.

Frenzy – Increases physical damage by 10%.

Strategy:

The main thing to watch out for here is Constricting Chains, this can be removed with trinket, bubble and ice block; healers should absolutely have a trinket equipped for this fight because if the damage from the chains/zombies (yep they’re still spawning) doesn’t kill them, Meathook may drop the tank while they’re disabled.

Aside from chains, thie fight is fairly simple, but Meathook hits really hard and can make short work of an undergeared/unprepared group.

Loot Table:

Enchanted Wire Stitching

Kilt of Sewn Flesh

Meathook’s Slicer

Slaughterhouse Sabatons

Salramm the Fleshcrafter

Abilities:

Curse of Twisted Flesh – Reduces the enemy target’s maximum health by 25%, and inflicts 1500 Shadow damage every 3 sec. for 30 sec.

Explode Ghoul – Explodes a nearby ghoul, dealing 3800 to 4200 Fire damage to enemy targets within 10 yards.

Shadow Bolt – Hurls a bolt of dark magic at an enemy, inflicting Shadow damage.

Summon Ghouls – Summons two Ghoul Minions near the caster.

Strategy:

This fight is a lot of fun yet very straight forward. There is a lot of aoe damage so healers need to be on their toes, he will summon ghouls who must die, and soon after they die, he will explode them.  His main ability is shadowbolt, so aside from the aoe corpse explosion, this fight is total tank and spank.

Loot Table:

Waistband of the Thuzadin

Spiked Metal Cilice

Tome of Salramm

Flowing Cloak of Command

Chrono-Lord Epoch

Abilities:

Curse of Exertion – Increases the cost of spells and abilities by 100% for 10 sec.

Time Stop – Stops time in a 50 yard sphere for 2 sec.

Time Warp – Time slows down, reducing attack, casting and movement speed by 70% for 6 sec.

Wounding Strike – Savagely wounds the target, dealing 100% weapon damage, reducing healing effects by 25%, and 750 Physical damage every 1 sec. for 4 sec.

Strategy:

To make this fight easiest on the tank, everyone should stack up in once place, because when he casts Time Stop he will jump back and forth attacking everyone in the group, and the tank must pick him back up after this ends.

Curse of Exertion with the addition of Wounding Strike make this fight interesting to tank and heal as the healers may come close to oom and tanks may be low on threat depending on who gets Curse of Exertion, but as long as the dps pays attention to their aggro, you should be able to burn him down with no serious problems.

Loot Table:

Ouroboros Belt

Sempiternal Staff

Necklace of the Chrono-Lord

Treads of Altered History

Mal’Ganis

Abilities:

Carrion Swarm – A cresting wave of chaotic magic splashes over enemies in front of the caster, dealing 3230 to 3570 Shadow damage and 380 to 420 Shadow damage every 3 sec. for 15 sec.

Mind Blast – Inflicts 4163 to 4837 Shadow damage to an enemy.

Sleep – Puts an enemy to sleep for up to 10 sec. Any damage caused will awaken the target.

Vampiric Touch – Heals the caster for half the damage dealt by a melee attack.

Strategy:

Mal’Ganis should be tanked facing away from the group to avoid the cone damage of Carrion Swarm on the party.

If there is a shaman in the group, they should keep grounding totem down as often as possible to eat Mind Blast and Sleep. Any class that can dispel magic should be watching for party members (especially healers) that get put to sleep. Undead can use will of the forsaken, and Death Knights with Lichborn can pop it to get out of sleeps.

As you can tell, Sleep is the main thing to watch for in this fight, a lot can happen in a 10 second snooze.

At 1%ish Mal’Ganis will complete the event by taunting Arthas into going to Northrend and dissapearing, leading to current events. After Mal’Ganis is gone, he Arthas will tell you whatever is left in the chest is yours for the taking; Queue loot.

Loot Table:

Gloves of Northern Lordaeron

Discarded Silver Hand Spaulders

Leeka’s Shield

Dreadlord’s Blade

Beguiling Scepter

Demonic Fabric Bands

Gauntlets of Dark Conversion

Soul Preserver
