Deep in the heart of Wintergrasp Keep, Archavon the Stone Watcher guards ancient relics.

Accessible via an instance portal that opens for four hours after your faction achieves victory in Wintergrasp, Archavon the Stone Watcher is one of Wrath of the Lich King’s entry-level encounters and can be completed by most groups which have an appropriate balance of tanks, healers and DPS. The heroic version of the encounter demands a somewhat better geared group.

Archavon drops a mix of PvP and PvE tier set items. He doesn’t drop the tokens; he drops the actual item from one of the class sets. On Normal mode, he’ll drop one Tier 7(10) chest, leggings, or gloves, and one Hateful Gladiator’s chest, leggings, or gloves. On Heroic, he’ll drop two Tier 7(25) chests, leggings, or gloves, and two Deadly Gladiator’s chests, leggings, or gloves.


Gear and consumables

Like most Wrath of the Lich King raid encounters, this fight is tuned for players who are using level 80 epic gear, as well as the best flasks and food buffs available. Getting the best possible gear for your character will make this fight a whole lot easier.

In WotLK, professions can be used to craft high quality epic gear. Most raid and heroic bosses also drop an epic bind-on-equip item. These items are the easiest way to get your character geared up fast, but they’re expensive to craft or buy on the AH. The easiest way to get your hands on them is to use a guide like WoW Gold Secrets, which has tips for making several thousand gold per day. This is a great way to save time and down bosses faster.

Trash mobs

Only one type of trash mob exists in Archavon’s Vault: the Archavon Warders. There are four of them, and they can all be solo pulled.


Archavon Warder
HP: 756,000 (Heroic)

Shield Crush: Always used on the Warder’s aggro target, 10 second duration. Knocks an enemy back with a powerful blow, inflicting 23563 to 26437 (Heroic: 47125 to 52875) Physical damage and increasing their susceptibility to Physical damage by 300% for 10 sec.

Rock Shower: 5 – 45 yd. range. Causes a shower of rocks and debris to pelt the targeted area for 2500 (Heroic: 5000) damage per second.

Whirl: The Warder whirls around, dealing 14138 to 15862 (Heroic: 23563 to 26437) Physical damage to nearby enemies (mitigated by armor).

Tanks The most significant threat posed by each Warder is Shield Crush. Unless your gear is very good, you cannot tank the Warder while you’re afflicted by Shield Crush.

An Offtank should stand next to the Warder while it’s being tanked, and when the Main Tank is knocked back, immediately taunt the warder and tank it until the MT’s Shield Crush debuff expires.


Archavon the Stone Watcher


HP: 2,300,900 (Heroic: 9,970,700)

Melee: Hits for moderate damage on a tank.

Impale: Every 45 seconds or so, Archavon will stomp his feet on the ground, dealing 4000 (Heroic: 8000) damage and a 2 second stun to all members of the raid. At the same time, he’ll lunge for his threat target (usually the Main Tank) and lift him into the air, incapacitating him for 8 seconds. During this time, Archavon will attack whoever’s second on his threat list.

Choking Cloud: Every 30 seconds or so, Archavon will leap at a random player in the raid. The leap will deal around 4000 (Heroic: 8000) Physical damage (mitigated by armor) to its target and anyone else within 10 yards. A Choking Cloud will appear for up to 30 seconds wherever Archavon lands; standing in this cloud afflicts players with a -50% chance to hit debuff.

Rock Shards: Every 15 seconds or so, Archavon will shower a random player in the raid with stone shards. The shards will deal around 10,000 (Heroic: 20,000) Physical damage (mitigated by armor) over 3 seconds to the player and anyone else within 5 yards of him. If the player moves, the Rock Shards will follow him; the damage is unavoidable.

Berserk: Five minutes after being engaged, if Archavon is still alive his damage will increase dramatically and he will quickly lay waste to your raid.

Main Tank Simply charge into the room and engage Archavon, building threat. Pull him to the left side of the room to give the raid as much room as you can.

Raid Follow the Main Tank into Archavon’s room and spread out as much as possible.

Melee DPS To minimize the number of Melee DPS who will be caught in Rock Shards when it gets cast, spread out around the sides and back of Archavon.


Phase One

Tanks Build threat on Archavon (the Main Tank should be at the #1 threat position; the Offtank should be at the #2 position). If Archavon leaps toward a random player in the raid, he is using his Leap / Choking Cloud ability; this is not an aggro drop, so just wait for him to come back to you. However, if he stuns everyone and actually picks up the tank (it will be accompanied by the emote “Archavon the Stone Watcher lunges for <player name>”), he’s using Impale, and will start attacking the second person on his threat list. At this point the Offtank needs to taunt Archavon if he’s not already second on threat, and tank him until the Main Tank is released.

DPS, Healers Damage Archavon and heal up any players who are injured. If a Choking Cloud appears on you, get out of it ASAP. If Rock Shards start falling on your head, you can’t avoid them; heal yourself if you can, and do your best to get away from other players so you don’t cause them to take damage as well. Melee should back away from the rest of the melee group, as Rock Shards is very dangerous if it’s damaging five players at once.

The Main Tank usually needs 1-2 healers on Normal mode and 3-5 on Heroic. There’s no real set pattern to the damage the raid takes on this fight, and much of it can be avoided, but not all.


When Archavon falls, you’ve cleared this instance. Congratulations!
